Theory of Change:

Your Map of the Context of Change You're Navigating

A theory of change (ToC) serves as a comprehensive map of the terrain an organization is navigating, showing the broader context of the social issue they're addressing and how change happens in that space.

A ToC is more than just a strategic framework—it’s your organization’s comprehensive map, guiding you through the complex landscape of social change. It provides a bird’s-eye view of the broader context in which you’re operating, helping you understand how change happens and identifying the most effective paths to your desired outcomes.

The Theory of Change Canvas is a FREE tool that empowers our community of grassroots changemakers with a structured yet flexible framework to master theory of change- it's perfect for leaders who aren't quite ready to invest in a professional ToC, or smaller organisations wanting to DIY.

There are 3 types of Theory of Change:

Your organization will benefit from having all three types of Theories of Change—Investigative, Explanatory, and Communicative—each serving a distinct purpose at different stages of a project or intervention. The specific focus and emphasis will depend on the type and stage of your initiative. In the early stages, an Investigative ToC helps map the terrain by exploring the problem, gathering data, and identifying best practices. During implementation, an Explanatory ToC supports ongoing refinement, testing assumptions, and adapting strategies in response to real-world dynamics. Finally, a Communicative ToC translates your approach into a clear, public-facing narrative that engages stakeholders and builds support. Together, these ToCs provide a comprehensive framework for planning, learning, and sharing your impact.

Strategic Implementation:

Past Projects

Values-based Healthcare Advocacy Campaign

After developing a comprehensive Theory of Change (ToC), I crafted a strategic framework designed to empower individuals to take proactive control of their health, with a focus on prevention. This initiative was grounded in thorough research and aimed to address the gap in preventative healthcare by emphasizing incremental behavior change.

Through my research, I identified the critical need for a strategy that combined health education with actionable, values-driven goals. I developed a framework that not only aligned health objectives with personal values but also created a clear, accessible pathway for individuals to engage with their health on their own terms. By utilizing behavior change theories, we provided individuals with practical tools and insights to adopt healthier lifestyles, leading to sustained and positive health outcomes.

This approach involved crafting a strategy that went beyond traditional healthcare models, incorporating elements such as educational content, personalized coaching, and community-driven support to ensure long-term engagement. Through these grassroots activities—social media campaigns, community workshops, and targeted messaging—we created a supportive ecosystem that encouraged individuals to prioritize their well-being and make meaningful, lasting changes in their daily lives.

Training Curriculum Development

In partnership with Thought For Food (TFF), a global leader in empowering the next generation of food and agriculture innovators, I designed and implemented a comprehensive training course focused on applying systems thinking for social change. This project went beyond traditional training by integrating Theory of Change (ToC) principles to help participants navigate the complexities of food systems and develop strategies for lasting impact.

By leveraging systems thinking, we explored how interconnected elements in the food ecosystem—ranging from policy to supply chains to community engagement—can be transformed to create scalable, sustainable innovations. Through a tailored impact strategy, participants were equipped not only with the skills to assess and address systemic challenges but also with practical tools to translate their vision into action.

This initiative was part of a broader impact strategy to build long-term capacity within TFF’s global network, ensuring that participants are not only innovators but changemakers capable of driving meaningful, lasting transformation in the food and agriculture sectors.

Advocacy & Fundraising Campaign

In collaboration with Safeguard Women, I led a transformative advocacy and fundraising campaign aimed at promoting women's safety in urban areas. This initiative was designed to address the root causes of gender-based violence and create safer, more inclusive environments for women by implementing a comprehensive Theory of Change (ToC) and an impactful strategy.

The project combined innovative advocacy tactics with community engagement to raise awareness and mobilize support for women's organizations. By mapping key stakeholders, identifying leverage points, and using data-driven insights, we designed a strategy that not only focused on immediate support for women but also sought to address the broader social and policy issues surrounding urban safety.

Throughout the campaign, I utilized a grassroots approach—integrating education, social media, and communications strategies to amplify the message and build momentum for long-term change. This initiative empowered communities and advocates to take collective action, leading to both immediate outcomes and sustained efforts for systemic reform.
